Course details

This Combined Bachelor's and Master's (CBM) is a four-year accelerated program. Over the first three years you’ll complete an extended major in Sport Science, Exercise and Health, and some units from the Master of Public Health. You can then choose to exit after three years with an Advanced Bachelor's Degree in Sport and Exercise Sciences, or continue with the Master of Public Health and be awarded a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Sciences and a Master of Public Health at the end of the four years.

This Combined Bachelor's and Master's (CBM) course is designed to provide a holistic understanding of the use of exercise as a modality in the treatment of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, metabolic and other chronic and complex conditions. This course will prepare you for a career in public health research or practice.

About the course

By completing this Combined Bachelor's and Master's course you will graduate with both a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Sciences and a Master of Public Health.

In your first three years you will complete the Sport Science, Exercise and Health Extended Major where you will learn to apply theoretical knowledge to develop and deliver exercise-based interventions for fitness, performance, and health and wellbeing. The award-winning work-integrated learning program will provide you with opportunities to integrate theoretical knowledge in real-world professional settings as well as to interact with professionals in the industry. This course is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA - upon graduation, you will be able to apply for credentialing as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES). During this time you will also undertake a semester of postgraduate study.

You will then complete a final year of postgraduate study in the Master of Public Health which will provide a foundation in the research disciplines of epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics and health promotion, as well as the broader social context in which public health programs are planned, delivered and evaluated.


If you decide not to continue in the CBM you can exit after three years with a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Sciences (Advanced). Note that the Advanced Bachelor Degree is available only as a CBM exit award. It is not offered for direct enrolment and is not awarded on completion of the CBM.

The Master of Public Health practicum gave me experience into what working in the real world is like for a public health professional. My decision to work with a non-for-profit organisation provided me with insights into disability health care and supported employment, and equipped me with the tools to manage and facilitate a community-based project for children with limb differences. The practicum has also been a great way for me to build networks. I was surrounded by a diverse and encouraging group of people, and working with them has been helpful in developing my confidence, personal growth and professional capabilities. The practicum was an invaluable opportunity and has been beneficial in enabling me to pursue a career in public health.

"Of course we know that exercise is good for you, but I continue to be surprised at how much of a difference well designed and delivered exercise can make both on how individuals feel, but also their clinically relevant outcomes. For cancer patients and survivors, and more broadly in other populations, the research continues to reflect these benefits. Our challenge now is to make exercise accessible for more people, and getting people to stick with it."

Whilst completing her PhD, Bonnie established Thriving Exercise Rehabilitation Inc – a not for profit with the mission to use exercise expertise to improve the health outcomes of kids & young people. Thriving offers exercise services for kids and young people, catering specifically for those who experience barriers to being active at school or within the community. This includes young people with musculoskeletal conditions; poor or delayed movement skills; behavioural, developmental or social challenges (e.g. non-verbal, social or activity anxiety); childhood cancer; metabolic disease and complex juvenile conditions (incl. intellectual/behavioural difficulties, depression/anxiety and Autism).

Assured Pathways

Our Assured Pathways, formerly known as Direct Pathways, give you a guaranteed place in the professional postgraduate degree of your choice at the start of your studies. Your place is guaranteed on the basis of your high school performance or equivalent (subject to satisfactory performance in your bachelor’s degree). This provides you with clear progression towards a postgraduate qualification. 

Assured Pathway to the Master of Public Health -

Entry requirements and progression rules

  • Prerequisite subjects of your chosen major

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree, with an overall UWA course Weighted Average Mark of at least 60% 

  • ATAR: 92, or 98 via BPhil (Hons)

Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s (CBM) 

The Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s (CBM) is a four-year accelerated program for those with an ATAR of 90 or above. On completion, you will graduate with both a specialised Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in only four years. 

Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Master of Public Health – This CBM is designed to provide you with a holistic understanding of the use of exercise as a modality in the treatment of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, metabolic and other chronic and complex conditions. In your first three years you will complete the Sport Science, Exercise and Health Extended Major, you will then complete a final year of postgraduate study in the Master of Public Health.

UWA Exercise and Performance Centre

Exercise services, including individual and group programs, are provided by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) and Physiotherapists.

Upon presentation to the EPC, an initial assessment is conducted including client interview and a physical assessment to identify history and goals. Following the assessment, recommendations, education and other services are provided to suit your exercise and lifestyle.

A variety of clinical programs are run each week through EPC, providing a tailored and supportive environment for clients. Specific programs target a range of health goals, cardiometabolic disease, musculoskeletal pain or injury, cancer, healthy aging, and more.

The EPC is linked with the School of Human Sciences providing clinical training to postgraduate students undertaking the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.
