Admission pathways to University

Select the option below that best describes your path to University and find out the requirements for entry.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Australian Year 12 students

To be eligible to UWA based on previous or current Australian Year 12 studies, applicants must have completed the relevant state Certificate of Education and achieved an Australian Tertiary Aggregate Rank (ATAR) of 75 or above. Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s English Language Competence (ELC) requirements.

Applicants completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) are required to successfully complete the diploma program. To be eligible to UWA, IB graduates will require a minimum score of 24 or higher. Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements. View further information on satisfying UWA’s entry requirements for IB graduates.

Applicants sitting Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) or International Baccalaureate in Western Australia can apply for an Early Offer and be admitted based on predicted ATAR or IB score. Predicted ATARs are determined by the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) based on Year 11 results. Applicants are still required to achieve WACE and complete four ATAR subjects as well as provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements.

ATAR adjustments

UWA has a number of equity pathways that grant applicants an adjustment to their ATAR. When an adjustment is made to an applicant’s ATAR, this will be referred to as a Selection Rank. Refer to the pathways table below.

Broadway — Applicants will automatically have an adjustment made to their ATAR if they have completed the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) ATAR examinations at a UWA Broadway-identified school and achieved an ATAR of 70 or above. Broadway schools are those located in the Perth metropolitan area and have a three-year ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) average score at or below the Western Australian median, or are a school located in regional or remote Western Australia. View further information on Broadway, including on ATAR adjustments and the list of Broadway schools available.

First in Family — Applicants with parents or guardians who have not completed a university-level degree, may be eligible for a place at UWA through the First in Family program. Applicants must achieve an ATAR of 70 or above and satisfy UWA’s ELC requirements.

UWay or EAS — Uway or the Educational Access Scheme is for applicants who believe their preparation to commence studies at UWA has been adversely affected. Depending on the circumstances and the evidence provided, UWA may adjust an applicant’s ATAR. Once an adjustment is made, the applicant may become eligible to UWA’s undergraduate degrees.

ATAR plus additional criteria — Some of UWA’s Professional Pathway courses require additional criteria for entry. These include Medicine and Dentistry, which require the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) and an interview, as well as a sufficiently high ATAR. Dentistry also requires the completion of a Spatial Awareness Test. Music Specialist Studies requires applicants to audition, as well as achieve an ATAR of 75 or higher.

Applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for UWA’s undergraduate degrees based on previous higher education studies, applicants must have completed one full-time semester or the equivalent of studies at an Australian university and at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 7 or higher; and have achieved a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (7) or above. Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements. Applicants who have completed one full-time year or the equivalent of studies at the AQF Level 7 or higher, within the previous two years of application, and achieved a GPA of 4.0 (7) or above are not required to provide separate evidence of ELC to be eligible.

Review UWA’s Admission Coursework Policy, Appendix Schedule B, for further information on satisfying the University’s entry requirements based on previous higher education studies.

Applicants who have completed Higher Education studies outside of Australia must have completed the equivalent of one semester of an AQF Level 7 qualification with a GPA comparable to an Australian GPA of 4.0 on a 7.0 scale; separate evidence of ELC is also required. UWA will determine the equivalence to an Australian Level 7 qualification using the Australian Government’s Department of Education and Training Country Education Profiles.

Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

To be eligible for UWA’s undergraduate degrees based on previous VET studies, applicants must have completed an AQF Level 5 qualification or above. Applicants who have completed a Level 5 or a Level 6 AQF qualification with a full-time duration of 12 months or more and completed within two years prior to commencement at the University are not required to provide separate evidence of ELC. All other applicants must provide evidence of satisfying UWA's ELC requirements.

Applicants who have completed VET studies outside of Australia must have completed the equivalent of an AQF Level 5 qualification; separate evidence of ELC is also required. UWA will determine the equivalence to an Australian Level 5 qualification using the Australian Government’s Department of Education and Training Country Education Profiles.

Review UWA’s Policy on Admission, Schedule A, for further information on satisfying the University’s ELC requirement.

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience can be assess under the UWA Experience Based Entry Pathway for entry into specified courses – refer to the pathways table below.

Applicants over the age of 20 before 1 March (1 August for semester two entry) in the year they wish to commence university can complete the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Applicants require a selection rank to meet entry as per the STAT Calculator on TISC.

Applicants who have completed a Foundation or Preparatory program at an Australian Group of Eight university may be eligible to UWA’s undergraduate degrees. Review UWA’s Admission Coursework Policy, Appendix Schedule B, for further information on accepted Foundation or Preparatory programs.

Course pathways

The below table represents entry requirements for UWA undergraduate programs for domestic applicants.

For most courses, satisfying the ATAR requirement guarantees entry, for courses with prerequisites that have not been met, applicants can utilise the Bachelor of Arts, Biomedical Science, Business, Commerce, Environmental Design and Science to satisfy these requirements before transferring to their preferred course.

Course pathways by ATAR requirement

For the most up-to-date details on course pathways by ATAR, search for the Admissions Coursework Policy Schedule 1 Pathways Table in the UWA Policy Library.
