The question of how to achieve sustainable and profitable production is addressed. You will visit and collect data from the UWA Future Farm at Pingelly. The links between soils, water, plants, livestock and farm management are explored on the farm, in lectures and through assessment items including economic modelling. You will develop an in-depth understanding of how farming systems function, which will allow you to anticipate and adapt to the many challenges that are currently facing our agricultural systems. The skills gained in this honours specialisation will equip you for careers in a wide range of areas including farm managers, farm advisors and policy analysts in the public sector.

About the course

Australia's agricultural industry is a key part of the world's food supply system. The challenges of a rapidly growing population, climate change, and the limitations of land and fresh water all impact on the ability of agriculture to meet the demand for food, fibre and fuel. As part of the Agricultural Science major you will investigate how to address this demand by developing an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems. Agricultural Science provides the research, technology and information for the sustainable and ethical development of the agricultural industry. Your studies will include soil science, genetics, cropping systems, soil-plant interaction, livestock production, agricultural economics and grain marketing. It is envisaged that there will be up to two overnight field trips (costing up to $200 per student to cover the cost of food and accommodation on overnight field trips, across a maximum of four nights).

Students who have not achieved a scaled mark of at least 50 in Mathematics Methods ATAR or equivalent or higher are required to complete SCIE1500. Students who have not achieved a scaled mark of at least 50 in Mathematics Applications ATAR or equivalent or higher are required to complete MATH1720 and SCIE1500. Note: Students who have completed MATH1721, are not required to complete SCIE1500. As predicted by the UN, the world population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. We need to find ways to intensify agriculture to meet our needs but at the same time look after the environment we live in. I want to change the world for the better and make a difference.  The opportunity to pick up a second major in Conservation Biology (with advanced standing) gives me the knowledge required to understand the link between conserving the environment while achieving optimal output in agriculture.

UWA is a world-class institution for Agriculture, with esteemed professors and researchers who provide us all the tools to excel. 

One thing I enjoyed most about my course was the opportunity to attend the 16th International Students Summit in Tokyo with a classmate. I made so many friends from top agricultural universities and I am sure we will be working together in the future to solve major agricultural challenges.
