Challenge the status quo and make a difference to society

UWA is among the country’s leading academic institutions for competitive research funding and research publications. We are a part of the Group of Eight, a consortium of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities. Located in the time zone with the largest proportion of the world’s population, UWA has built strong collaborative links with other universities, research institutes, businesses and governments around the world.

We are Western Australia’s flagship university and its only global top 100 university. We consistently awarded the most research funding in the state. Many of our PhD students distinguish themselves by publishing their research in international journals. A PhD from UWA is a PhD from a top 1% university in the world.

Why choose Arts, Business, Law and Education (ABLE)?

Our academic programs have had a considerable social impact. They have fostered an Australian Prime Minister and State Premiers, as well as many other leaders in Australian society and other countries.

A PhD contributes to knowledge and could open doors to a career that can improve lives. You will be taught by some of the best researchers in the human sciences. A number of our researchers are distinguished Members of the Australian Academies

In March 2019, UWA was recognised in the Engagement and Impact Assessment 2018-19 National Report, with 14 case studies rated highly for impact. About a third of these case studies originated from ABLE. These high impact areas are in the following:

Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services
History of Archaeology
Law and Legal Studies

Find out about other areas of impact through the UWA Research Impact page

Researchers from an impressive range of ABLE disciplines have received funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) in order to conduct pioneering work. These include highly competitive and prestigious fellowship schemes: the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), Future Fellowships and an Australian Laureate Fellowship. They have had notable successes in other schemes such as Discovery Projects, Linkage Projects and the Discovery Indigenous Award. Moreover, our researchers were awarded funding of $26 million for the first ever humanities-based ARC Centre of Excellence, the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions.

Our researchers are actively engaged with the public through public lectures, events, and open access outlets. UWA is one of the Founding Partners of
The Conversation, and many of our researchers contribute their expertise to the publication on a regular basis.

At ABLE, we encourage our PhD students to be involved in a range of stimulating and career-building activities, such as the popular Three Minute Thesis (3MT). The competition offers participants an opportunity to present an engaging and dynamic three-minute talk about their research to a non-specialist audience. UWA Winners have the opportunity to compete against other winners from the Asia-Pacific region.

Upon enrolment, postgraduate students automatically become members of the UWA Postgraduate Students Association (PSA). Affiliated with the UWA Student Guild, the PSA is the representative body for postgraduates at UWA. It represents, plans activities and provides services to members. PSA committee members represent postgraduates on UWA Committees from the Senate down to the School level.

Our postgraduate students have the opportunity to learn more about, and develop skills in running, academic journals. Limina is a refereed academic journal of historical and cultural studies based in the School of Humanities. The journal operates with a special commitment to publishing the work of postgraduates and early career researchers, and promotes resistance to traditional disciplinary boundaries.
