UWA Academy for Young Mathematicians

What is the Academy?

The Academy is an enrichment programme in Mathematics organised by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of The University of Western Australia for high school students who are currently in Years 10 and 11. Advanced Year 9 students, for example those who have completed the Noether or Polya Enrichment Series of the Mathematics Challenge, are also encouraged to participate.

The programme of the Academy is suitable for a broad range of mathematically able students. The aim is to broaden and deepen their mathematical knowledge, to involve them in problem solving and to extend the range of their mathematical skills.

How is the Academy organised?

***Unfortunately, the program is not running this year due to the ongoing uncertainty regarding COVID. We hope to be back again in 2023.

The first session is at 10.00am on Saturday 23 March in the Weatherburn Lecture Theatre of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, UWA. Enrolment commences at 09:45am prior to the session. Parking should be available on Fairway Drive.

What happens at an Academy session?

Each session comprises of a short lecture and a workshop during which students work in groups on selected problems. Problem sheets are distributed at the end of the session, and students are expected to complete a number of problems for homework before the next session. Prizes are awarded for meritorious solutions to selected problems.

All the material presented at the Academy is distributed in the form of printed notes. However you will be expected to work on problems so you'll need a pen and notebook or paper. A calculator is not required, but not forbidden either.

History of the Academy

The Academy commenced in 1995, enrolling about 60 students from 25 schools in the metropolitan area, ranging from inner city to outer suburban schools and including schools from the State, Catholic and Independent Systems.

The Academy has continued successfully in each year since then.

How do you join the Academy?
