Musical Participation in the Care of Patients with Alzheimers
A clinical investigation of the effectiveness of group
singing for people with Alzheimer’s
UWA Conservatorium of Music’s Nicholas Bannan is working as part of a research team at Trent University in Nottingham in the United Kingdom on a clinical investigation exploring the efficacy of group singing for people with Alzheimer’s.
This project draws on protocols from a project held in 2004, ‘Singing for the Brain’, devised by Dr Bannan for The Alzheimers Society. There are now more than 40 Singing for the Brain choirs operating across the UK.
The BBC released a documentary about the project, which screened in Australia in 2018.
As part of this project, Dr Bannan will work as an advisor and conduct some project work as with the UK-based team.
Goals
Discover if responses to group singing activity are positive
Identify any progress in patients to learning music
Answer the question of whether people with Alzheimer’s could participate in group singing
