Centre for Sleep Science

WA’s own Centre at the forefront of sleep research and education

Research conducted at UWA’s Centre for Sleep Science aims to identify the causes of poor sleep and investigate potential therapies. The Centre boasts five bedrooms equipped with state-of-the-art sleep recording and analysis equipment for laboratory-based research sleep studies. Facilities include training and seminar rooms as well as offices for staff and students.

Postgraduate degrees in sleep training are based at the Centre, and include courses in adult and paediatric sleep science. Our academic courses are supported by a clinical partnership with the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The Centre also facilitates a Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine for dentists with an interest in sleep medicine, as well as Medicine Doctor teaching for second-year medical students. Staff from the Centre regularly speak about sleep health to community groups, such as schools, industry and universities.

Over the past 15 years, research produced by the Centre has significantly increased the understanding of the consequences of poor sleep, which include increased risk of mental and physical illness, car and industrial accidents, and productivity loss at work.

Western Australia has been a leader in Australian sleep medicine for many years and UWA's Centre for Sleep Science provides another unique opportunity for WA to be at the forefront of sleep research and education.
