Naomi trained as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, graduating in 1984. She then worked in the UK as an RN for 3 years before returning to Australia where she continued to work as an RN while completing her BSc at the University of Western Australia. After completing Honours in Biochemistry she worked as a Research Assistant in Physiology and then as a Research Nurse with the UWA Department of Surgery, at Fremantle Hospital, running a clinical trial testing the effects of growth factors on the healing of chronic leg ulcers. This then lead to Naomi completing a PhD in the departments of Biochemistry & Surgery in the area of wound healing. She then worked in this area of clinical research for a number of years investigating the biochemical causes of chronic wounds and their inability to heal.
In 2004 Naomi took up her current lecturing position in Biochemistry and her main role is coordinating units and teaching extensively within the Medical, Dental & Podiatry Degrees.
Key research
- Naomi has been working with Professor Peter Hartmann in the area of lactation research. Peter’s research has a strong emphasis on the comparative biochemistry of lactation. Naomi is specifically involved in the area of biochemical analysis of milk with regard to the establishment of a Human Milk Bank at King Edwards Memorial Hospital in Perth.
Major research interests
- Biochemistry of nutrition
- Endocrinology (hormones)
- Lactation
- Tissue engineering
- Wound healing
