English competency

English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place.

    You can choose up to six preferences when you apply through TISC. You should list your preferences in order from your most desired course onwards; this way you’ll have plenty of options to get into UWA.

    You’re almost there! After answering a few questions, you’ll need to make a declaration about your application.

Course details

This major provides you with a thorough understanding of the scientific basis of diagnosing, treating and preventing human disease, as well as an appreciation of how medical research forms new insights into disease every day. You'll be taught by medical practitioners involved in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions and by pathologists, researchers, physicians and medical scientists engaged in various disciplines of pathology. You'll be given the opportunity to interact with traditional academic staff as well as working with professional pathologists from PathWest.

About the course

You have a unique opportunity to sample content from a wide variety of disciplines of pathology including microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, anatomical pathology, haematology and medical genetics. You’ll graduate with an appreciation of the cooperative contribution of these disciplines to the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing understanding of a variety of human diseases.

About the course

Your studies will combine practical sessions that demonstrate multidisciplinary approaches to pathology questions with up-to-date laboratory diagnostic scenarios. To prepare for success in a global workforce you'll develop your ability to communicate effectively and learn how to find, interpret and critically evaluate scientific information. The theoretical components of the course are complemented by laboratory and tutorial classes utilising clinical material and cases, as well as relevant research topics within the field. You will apply scientific knowledge and techniques to these issues and engage in scientific problem solving.

Core

Students who have not achieved a scaled mark of at least 50 in ATAR Human Biology or ATAR Biology or equivalent will need to take ANHB1101 or BIOL11030 or IMED1001 in their first semester to meet prerequisites for SCIE1106. IMED1001 is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Biomedicine or Biomedical Engineering [MJD-EBMEG]. Students who have not achieved a scaled mark of at least 50 in ATAR Chemistry or equivalent will need to take CHEM1003 in first semester to meet prerequisites for SCIE1106:

I chose to study Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as my major because I wanted to gain a solid understanding of the mechanisms and complexities of numerous diseases as well as their treatment and prevention. This would help me pursue a postgraduate degree and a career in the health industry. 

UWA's flexible course structure enables me to branch out and pursue my other interests, such as learning a new language, while studying my main degree. But my favourite aspect of studying here would be the opportunities to interact with numerous professionals in the field, who are very engaging in terms of delivering their lessons and tutorials. They relate what we learn to clinical examples that they have worked on which makes the learning process more enriching.

I am studying Pathology and Laboratory Medicine because I was interested to learn about the different diseases, their diagnoses, pathogenesis and clinical characteristics. This course has a balance of theory and practical work making it exciting to study. The lectures provide necessary information that goes on to help you during your practical labs, and the facility at QEII Medical Centre, where most of the labs are held, allows students to interactively learn and experience the ‘real life’ analysis of the laboratory aspect.

One of my main reasons for choosing UWA was its respected reputation. At the same time, UWA is flexible with the courses and units it offers; along with your core and complementary units from your course, you are expected to do broadening units and electives that give you basic knowledge in other fields.
