Teaching Outdoors - GEOSM506
This micro-credential aims to introduce primary or secondary school teachers and educators to the wealth of opportunities for incorporating outdoor learning activities into teaching aspects of the STEM and HASS curriculums at all levels. The micro-credential combines online materials, case studies and discussions with a 1-day field excursion and project-based learning to explore how different field sites can contribute to a number of curriculum areas in STEM and HASS, including natural, environmental and biological sciences, humanities and environmental humanities and literature.

What you'll learn
Learn the types of outdoor localities that can be used and adapted and the types of information and curriculum areas that can be incorporated at a single location.
Identify suitable local sites and how data gathered can be used in project-based learning activities.
Develop an activity from data collected on the field excursion.

- Participants will gain insight into the links between earth and environmental science, biology (especially vegetation), landscapes, physics (especially seismology), WA's rich history, and geography (especially urban development, and planning vs engineering), environmental humanities and literature.
- The aim is to highlight the variety of sites that can be used for outdoor education and opportunities to develop innovative teaching and learning contexts that integrate disciplinary knowledge and its practical application.

This micro-credential is ideal for primary or secondary school teachers and educators who seek to enhance their professional skills in creative teaching and project-based learning activities throughout the science curriculum.
Recommended prior knowledge:
Relevant degree and/or teaching qualifications and/or teaching experience.
How does it work?
Your 50 hours total effort consist of recorded lecturers and online discussions (3 hours per week), a one-day field excursion and 4 hours per week of personal study for 6 weeks.

This 2 Professional Development Points micro-credential is stackable with other micro-credentials (to total 6 Professional Development Points) for unspecified academic credit towards a relevant course at UWA.
