UWA Welcome Grant

The University of Western Australia is offering a $1,500 Welcome Grant to all international students studying a degree on campus for the first time in 2022. 

If you’re a new international student or have started your degree online due to border restrictions, you could receive $1,500 cash to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation and getting set up to study in your new home in Perth.  

To be eligible for this grant, you will be :

  • Be a fee-paying international student enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at The University of Western Australia (excluding Study Abroad and Exchange students)
  • Be commencing on-campus at UWA (Perth or Albany) for the first time in Semester 1 2022 or Semester 2 2022. This means you would have started studying with UWA online overseas due to border closures, or be commencing with UWA for the first time in 2022
  • Have arrived in Australia on or after Wednesday 1 December 2021
  • Have not previously received a UWA Welcome Grant
  • Completed the UWA Welcome Grant application form in person by the end of the teaching period of your commencing Semester (Friday 27 May 2022 for Semester 1 or Friday 21 October 2022 for Semester 2 on-campus commencements)

What can I use the UWA Welcome Grant for?
The UWA Welcome Grant is to assist all our new and continuing international students starting on-campus studies for the first time. This is a cash grant that you can use towards anything you like, including the cost of travel, accommodation and getting set up to study in your new home in Perth or Albany.
Is the UWA Welcome Grant only for new students?
The grant is for both new international students starting their degree in 2022, as well as for continuing students who have been unable to travel to Western Australia previously due to travel restrictions.
How do I apply for the UWA Welcome Grant?

Once you arrive in Perth or Albany, visit the International Student Lounge. Our Team will then confirm your eligibility and provide a link to the application form. During the application process, you will need to provide details of an Australian bank account held in your own name in order for the payment to be processed.

When will I receive the UWA Welcome Grant?

Once you have submitted a completed UWA Welcome Grant application form, you will receive the grant payment after the census date of your first semester on campus (Thursday 31 March 2022 for Semester 1, or Wednesday 31 August 2022 for Semester 2) or shortly after the final teaching week deadline for your commencing Semester (Friday 27 May 2022 for Semester 1, or Friday 21 October 2022 for Semester 2). Please note: it will take approximately 15 working days for the payment to appear in your Australian bank account.

Can I receive the UWA Welcome Grant if I am studying on campus in Semester 1 or Semester 2?
Yes, you will receive the UWA Welcome Grant if you are studying on campus for the first time in 2022. However, the grant is a once-off payment so you will receive payment for your commencing semester only.
How will I receive the UWA Welcome Grant?
The AUD $1,500 cash payment will be paid into an Australian Bank account held in your own name. This will be paid after the census date of your first semester on campus and will be paid within semester teaching periods. Please note: it will take approximately 15 working days for the payment to appear in your Australian bank account. 
Who can receive the UWA Welcome Grant?

International students studying undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degrees on campus for the first time. Higher Degree by Research full fee waiver students, Australia Award scholars, UWA College students and Government sponsored students are not eligible to receive this grant. Eligible courses include all undergraduate bachelor pass, bachelor honours (integrated), or combined bachelor degree courses, all Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s courses, and all graduate certificate, graduate diploma or postgraduate degree (by coursework or coursework and dissertation) programs offered by the University and published in the UWA Handbook.

Where is the International Student Lounge at UWA Crawley?

The International Student Lounge is located on the first floor of Shenton House, on the Perth campus.

Are there any tax implications of the UWA Welcome Grant?

The University does not provide taxation advice to students and recommends students seek their own taxation advice in relation to the tax treatment of the UWA Welcome Grant received.

Who is classified as a government international sponsored student?

Any international student whose studies are funded either by the Australian Government or international agencies or governments. For full details, visit international sponsored students.

Will I be eligible for the Welcome Grant if I have enrolled in online units but will be studying on campus?

Yes, you will be eligible for the Welcome Grant if you are enrolled and starting your studies for the first time on campus in Perth or Albany, whether online or face-to-face.

What do I need to do after submitting my application for the Welcome Grant?

If you are successful, you will receive a confirmation email from UWA after submitting an online application. You will need to bring your passport and Australian bank details to the International Student Lounge at Shenton House (located on the Perth campus) from Monday to Thursday between 9.30am to 3.00pm to finalise your application. You will receive the cash payment in your Australian bank account 15 working days after the Census Date of the semester you commence.

If I arrive on campus after the Census Date of my commencing semester, will I be eligible for the Welcome Grant?

Yes, you are still eligible for the Welcome Grant. Once you have finalised your application at the International Student Lounge, you will receive the cash payment in your Australian bank account after 15 working days.

What should I do if I do not receive the grant after two weeks?

If you have completed all the steps mentioned in question three, contact the International Student Support team via askUWA and we will follow up for you.

If I’m a continuing student and not eligible for a Welcome Grant, is other support available?

If you have been informed that you are not eligible for the Welcome Grant, you may still be eligible for a one-off SOS Returning Student Grant. 

Eligibility criteria includes, but is not limited to:

  • you commenced your studies on campus in 2020 or 2021
  • you had to return home due to COVID-related reasons in 2020 or 2021
  • you will be commencing your studies on campus in Semester 1 or Semester 2 2022

What if I am unable to make it to the International Student Lounge before the deadline?
If it is not possible to present in-person due to exceptional circumstances the application can be assessed virtually with the approval of the Director Student Life.
