Course overview 

If you don’t yet meet the English entry requirements for your UWA degree, the Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course (Bridging Course) may be the ideal pathway. It is the most common and recommended English pathway, offering direct entry into most UWA degrees.  

This course builds your confidence and academic language skills, helping you prepare for the demands of university study in Australia.  

The Bridging Course runs three times a year, with intakes aligned to UWA’s semester start dates. Each intake includes two 10-week modules: 

• Module 1: helps you to improve your English and develop key academic skills. 
• Module 2: builds your language skills further through research, critical thinking, and academic tasks related to your future study area. 

The Bridging Course has been granted NEAS Premium Product Endorsement, a mark of excellence in English language education. NEAS is a leader in quality assurance for the English language sector, and this endorsement reflects the course’s high standards in teaching, learning, and assessment. 

What you will learn 

The Bridging Course will help you to: 

• Improve your English language skills to the level required by UWA. 
• Understand the structure and language of different of academic texts. 
• Build knowledge of the language used in your chosen discipline. 
• Develop an understanding of Australian academic and research culture. 
• Strengthen your analytical and reflective skills in an Australian academic context. 
• Complete a research paper and research presentations in your discipline area. 
• Learn how to attribute literary sources appropriately. 
• Build the confidence and skills to become an independent learner at an Australian university. 

Minimum entry requirements

Please note that IELTS and TOEFL results are valid for two years from the test date. UWA CELT only accepts valid test results for entry into the Bridging Course. In some cases, we may accept an IELTS Test Report Form older than two years if: 

• it can be verified through the IELTS TRF Verification Service, and 
• you can provide evidence that you have actively maintained or worked to improve your English since taking the test. 

Higher entry requirements 

Some UWA degrees have higher English language requirements. If you are planning to take the Bridging Course as a pathway into one of these degrees, you will need to begin with stronger English skills. If your degree requires an IELTS score higher than 6.5 overall (with no band below 6.0), the Bridging Course can still support your degree entry, depending on your current English level.  

• For the 10-week Bridging Course, you can enter with IELTS scores 0.5 lower in each band and overall. 
• For the 20-week Bridging Course, you can enter with IELTS scores 1.0 lower in each band and overall.

To progress into Module 2, you will need to achieve a final grade of 60% in Module 1 of the Bridging Course. 

To meet UWA’s standard English language requirement, you will need to achieve a final grade of 70% with no score below 60% in Module 2 of the Bridging Course. If you're entering a degree that has higher English language requirements, you will need to achieve a higher final grade.  

Please note: A small number of UWA degrees do not accept the Bridging Course as an English pathway. This is usually due to professional registration requirements after graduation, which may specify an external English examination. For full details, visit: English language requirements.

The Language and Communication Essentials course will support you to build clear, confident and fluent English communication skills. Ideal for everyday interactions and future academic success, this course is a pathway to all other English language programs at UWA CELT, as well as to UWA College.

You will learn the grammar, vocabulary and communication skills needed for listening, reading, speaking and writing in English. You will develop your language skills including how to:

• Read and understand different types of English texts.
• Write clearly and accurately.
• Take part in conversations and discussions with confidence. 
• Listen to and understand different types of spoken English.
• Speak clearly and fluently, with pronunciation that is easy to understand.
• Use grammar and vocabulary to communicate your ideas effectively.

The Language and Communication Essentials course is available from beginner to advanced levels. If you don’t have a recognised English language examination result, you can take the UWA CELT placement test. This helps us to identify your current English level and place you in the right class.

To progress to the next level of the course, you will need an overall score of 70%, with no individual score below 60%.

Language and Communication Essentials classes run Monday to Friday, on a morning schedule from 8.30am to 12.45pm.

The English for Academic Purposes course helps you strengthen your English in preparation for study in a university environment. This course is designed to prepare you for tertiary study in an English-speaking country by building the language skills you need for academic success. While the course focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening for academic purposes, you will also develop integrated language skills.

In five-week terms you will build the academic English skills you need to study with confidence. You will learn how to:

• Take notes during talks and lectures.
• Deliver and participate in seminars and presentations.
• Read and understand academic articles.
• Write clear and accurate academic assignments.
• Use library and online sources for research.
• Use technology to support your learning.
• Understand and adapt to the academic culture of an Australian university.

To join the English for Academic Purposes course, you will need an upper-intermediate level of English, or an IELTS of 5.5. If you don’t have a recognised English examination result, you can take the UWA CELT placement test. This helps us to identify your current English level and place you in the right class.

To successfully complete the English for Academic Purposes course, you must achieve a minimum of 65% overall, with no skill area below 60%.

English for Academic Purposes classes run Monday to Friday, on a morning schedule from 8.30am to 12.45pm.

Length: 5 weeks

This intensive course will help you to prepare for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. This course runs based on student demand. For this reason, we ask that you contact us if you are interested in applying to confirm availability.

The course focuses on the four key sections of the IELTS examination,  and helps you build the skills to improve your results. You will develop:

• Test-taking strategies for each section of the IELTS examination.
• Skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing.
• Greater confidence in completing the examination under test conditions.

You will need an upper-intermediate level of English to enrol in this course. If you don’t have a recognised English test result, you can take the UWA CELT placement test to identify your current English level to ensure you meet the minimum English competency requirement.

To complete this course successfully, you will need an overall score of 70% with no individual score nothing below 60%.

IELTS Examination Preparation classes run Monday to Friday, on a morning schedule from 8.30am to 12.45pm.
