Visa information

To study as an international student in Australia, you need to ensure you have the correct visa type depending on how long you want to study. Each visa type comes with different conditions you must abide by. It may be possible to study at UWA CELT on visitor, working holiday and student visas. All visa applications are handled by the Australia Government’s Department of Home Affairs. For more information about the different types of visas and study conditions, visit homeaffairs.gov.au

More important visa information

  • Student visa (subclass 500)

If you are studying on a student visa, you are protected by the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislative framework. It is important that you understand your rights and responsibilities under this framework.

It is a requirement of your student visa that you keep your current Australian address and phone number up to date with us. This allows us to contact you in an emergency. If your details change, you will need to let us know within seven days. We may need to share your contact information with relevant Commonwealth and State Government agencies, as required by law.

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
If you are going to study at UWA CELT on a student visa, you must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the full length of your visa. This helps to cover the cost of medical treatment and hospital care while you are in Australia.

UWA has a ‘preferred provider’ agreement with Medibank. When you accept your offer and pay your fees (including OSHC), we will arrange cover with Medibank for the duration of your student visa. However, OSHC is available through several providers, and you are welcome to choose a provider that suits you best.

You can find more information about OSHC here
  • English Examinations recognised for student visa purposes
To meet the English language requirement for a student visa, you will need to show evidence of your English proficiency through an approved examination. To view accepted English language examinations and the minimum scores required, visit Department of Home Affairs
  • Visa requirements versus UWA CELT entry requirements
It is important to know that the English language requirements for a student visa may be different from those needed to enter a UWA CELT course. Even if you meet UWA CELT’s entry requirements, the Department of Home Affairs may ask you to provide different proof of English proficiency for your visa application, regardless of your country of citizenship. If you’re unsure which requirements apply to you, we recommend checking with the Department of Home Affairs, or speaking with a UWA CELT education agent.
