About us
Our history
Established as Western Australia’s first university in 1911 and founded with a mission to ‘advance the prosperity and welfare of our communities’, the University opened in 1913 to just 184 students. Today, more than 28,000 students are enrolled from 115 countries.
Our motto ‘Seek Wisdom’ is as relevant today and into the future as it was when it was adopted by the UWA Senate in 1912. We remain committed to this, as we continue to encourage our students and staff to push beyond the bounds of what is known and what is possible.
For more than 35 years, The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching (UWA CELT) has upheld the University’s tradition of providing high-quality English language teaching in a friendly and supportive environment.
We provide a range of English language programs for learners at different levels, and offer a mixture of formal, academic, and conversational English. Our experienced teachers hold degrees and specialist qualifications in English language teaching and our programs combine expert teaching with practical language use, helping you develop the skills and confidence to become a lifelong English learner.
Reputation
A member of the Go8, a coalition of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities, UWA is consistently ranked as a world top 100 university – the only one in WA.
