Dual degree program

University of Denver and The University of Western Australia

The Dual Degree Program gives students the opportunity to receive degrees from two leading universities.

This agreement between the University of Denver (DU) Sturm College of Law and The University of Western Australia (UWA) Law School gives Juris Doctor students the opportunity to obtain two Juris Doctor degrees in four years.

The 2 + 1 + 1 year double degree program requires students to complete the first two years at their home institution law school. The second two years will be studied at the partner institution law school. The program exposes students to civil, criminal, private and public law in two quite different jurisdictions and provides the opportunity to undertake a range of option units including Family Law, Mining and Energy Law, Legal Internship, Environmental Law, Legal APPtitude, Legislation in Practice, The Global Lawyer, and Negotiation and Mediation (for more information refer to UWA and DU course listing). On completion of the four year program, students from each institution will be qualified to practise in both jurisdictions.

Student degree pathway

  • Years 1 and 2: Postgraduate study at home institution (either DU or UWA)
  • Year 3: Complete third year of study at partner institution on exchange*
  • Year 4: Complete fourth year of study at partner institution and earn a Juris Doctor degree from both DU and UWA

*During the third year of study as an exchange student at the partner institution, students will gain credit towards their home institution degree for the units they’ve completed. Upon completion of the third year of study, students have the opportunity to stay at the partner institution for an additional year to gain a Juris Doctor degree from both institutions. Dual degree students must be admitted to the JD program at the partner institution before starting the year 3 “exchange” year.

Tuition and fees

For the third year of the program (the student exchange year), you’ll pay your fees to your home institution. For more information on the cost of the third year (exchange year), check with your home institution.

For students who begin the program at DU, the fourth year of the program will be billed at UWA. Since the DU JD will be completed, all tuition and fees for the final year will be billed directly by UWA. The estimated tuition (in Australian dollars) can be calculated using the UWA fees calculator. Keep in mind that the estimated amount listed is the annual cost for a two-year program, and only the single fourth year of the program’s tuition fee is applicable to you.

For students who begin their program at UWA, the fourth year will be at DU. Since the UWA JD will be completed, all tuition and fees for the fourth year will be billed directly by DU. For more information on the tuition and fees structure at DU for the final year, see here
