My degree
There are a lot of complex challenges involved in these areas. Human Resource Management blends this with more of a focus on people and this is something that I’m really passionate about.
My favourite part was the challenging group projects which required the creation of strategies to solve real world problems, consulting for real clients, or conducting research projects around real problems faced by businesses. These projects were insightful, challenging, and gave many opportunities for building practical skills I can use in the workplace.
Why UWA?
UWA always appealed to me. I loved the campus from the moment I set foot there, and appreciate the flexibility in the course structure. For example, this flexibility has allowed me to add a second major to my bachelors, swap out Master's units to better suit my interests, and even complete a Practicum placement and gain academic credit for it. It has led to a well-rounded learning experience.
I have received three unit prizes throughout my time at UWA; The Industrial Relations Society of WA Prize 2015 for the top mark in Australian Employment Relations, The Gerard Daniel Prize for Strategic Human Resource Management 2018, and the Perron Prize for Ethics and Sustainability Management in 2018. I was also awarded the honour of speaking as the student representative at the UWA Business School Awards Ceremony.
Campus experience
I love the vibrant student culture – there is always something going on every week from a multitude of different clubs and societies. There is room for social aspects and having fun, as well as many professional opportunities to network and learn more about different industries. I think UWA has an excellent balance.
I was involved in the inaugural UWA Student Ambassador Leadership Development Program in 2018. This involved working as an ambassador for the university, and going out and speaking to high school students about the UWA experience, conducting tours of campus and volunteering at career events. This was really meaningful as sometimes the conversation wasn’t about which university the students should go to, but whether they are going to university at all.
The main club I have been involved in is 180 Degrees Consulting WA (180DC). 180DC is a student-run consulting club where we work for not-for-profit organisations. We engage in semester long projects for our clients around a set of key challenges faced by the client, and present deliverables. This is an incredible opportunity to not only gain real work experience in a professional environment, but also have the chance to make a social impact.
What's next?
I have just completed my main goal which was to finish my Master's degree. I have been offered a position as a Management Consultant in the Human Capital Team at Deloitte. My next career goals involve improving my consulting experience and skills and learning as much as possible during my graduate program.
