About the course

This course covers all aspects of architectural conservation from an international to local level, and aims to develop professional level skills in conservation planning and in practical building conservation.

Develop advanced cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply conservation methods and technologies to conservation problems. You’ll complete a range of practical conservation exercises in the field and generate and transmit solutions to complex conservation planning problems.


The course has four core units:

1) Introduction to Architectural Conservation which looks at the history and philosophy of conservation, the role of heritage organisations, the language and principles of the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter and the conservation planning processes it recommends, the roles of different disciplines, an introduction to practical building conservation, the assessment and protection of landscapes and townscapes, and the management and interpretation of significant places.

2) Conservation Planning in Practice teaches professional level skills in all the Burra Charter processes of conservation planning, beginning with research to understand and assess the cultural significance of places, to the development of policies designed to retain that significance, and how to prepare management strategies to implement those policies through their ongoing use and care.

3) Practical Building Conservation teaches professional-level practical skills in the investigation of significant places, in order to survey their physical condition and devise appropriate repair and maintenance schedules that are designed to conserve their cultural value and keep them in viable use.

4) Conservation in Cultural Landscapes, Historic Towns and Urban Precincts introduces key concepts in conservation and shows how the processes of identification, assessment, and management of cultural significance have been used in such places, from an international to local level.

Course structure details

All students complete 24 points from option Group A.

Group B units are only for students who have completed ARCT5583 Introduction to Architectural Conservation and/or ARCT5505 Conservation in Cultural Landscapes, Historic Towns and Urban Precincts in a previous degree. In this case, take unit(s) up to the value of 12 points from Group B and units from group A sufficient to bring the total to 24 points.
Option - Group A
Take up to the value of 24 points as per the sequence notes.
Option - Group B
Take units up to the value of 12 points as per the sequence notes.
