Interprofessional Clinical Education Academy

Advancing collaborative learning and clinical practice

Better learning through collaboration

The Interprofessional Clinical Education Academy is a cross-school platform for research, innovation and evaluation in interprofessional education, clinical simulation, team-based learning, leadership and communication across the health professions.

The Academy connects disciplines across UWA to develop and evaluate evidence-based models of collaborative clinical education. It brings together researchers, educators, students, clinicians, health services and professional partners around a shared agenda for high-quality interprofessional learning. Through research, annual simulation and education initiatives, capability development and translation into curriculum and workforce practice, the Academy strengthens collaborative, practice-ready health education and positions UWA as a leading Western Australian hub for interprofessional clinical education.
The Academy strengthens, coordinates and advances interprofessional learning and simulation-based education and research across UWA. It connects existing good practice, identifies priority opportunities and supports evidence-informed approaches that respond to accreditation expectations and health workforce needs.

Its work includes cross-school research projects, annual interprofessional clinical simulations, team-based learning, leadership and communication development, shared evaluation approaches, HDR supervision and mentoring, and partnerships with health services, professional bodies and communities. Research findings inform curricula, clinical education practice, accreditation evidence and workforce development initiatives. Inclusive and culturally responsive approaches are embedded across governance, research and educational activity, with consideration of diverse learners, clinicians, communities, rural and regional contexts, and accessibility needs.

Collaborative, practice-ready graduates

The Academy uses research, simulation and team-based learning to strengthen the capabilities health professionals need to communicate, lead and work effectively across disciplines and settings.

Our work

Interprofessional simulation and research

Annual interprofessional clinical simulations and related learning activities provide a platform for applied research, evaluation and translation. Findings inform curriculum design, accreditation evidence, clinical education practice and workforce development.

Priority areas

The Academy focuses on:

  • Interprofessional learning: connecting disciplines through purposeful, evidence-based learning experiences.
  • Simulation-based education: developing and evaluating authentic clinical simulations and structured debriefing.
  • Team-based practice: strengthening communication, leadership, role clarity and collaborative decision-making.
  • Research and evaluation: generating high-quality outputs, external funding and practical evidence for education and workforce development.
  • Capability and partnerships: supporting HDR students and early-career researchers while building sustained links with health services, professional bodies and communities.
  • Inclusive education: designing accessible, culturally responsive activities that reflect diverse learners, communities and clinical contexts.

The Academy adds value by coordinating activity across organisational boundaries while supporting, rather than duplicating, established discipline-based expertise.

Join the collaboration

The Academy welcomes collaboration from UWA schools and disciplines, health services, professional bodies, community partners, educators, researchers, clinicians and students interested in interprofessional education, simulation and collaborative practice.
