Work Integrated Learning

UWA’s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program opens doors to a remarkable variety of experiences for students.

Yash Vasta, currently pursuing a Master’s in Business Information and Logistics, shares how his internship with the Financial Crimes Division of the WA Police Force revealed the real-world impact of technology and teamwork. As well, Yash’s supervisor offers an insider’s perspective on what it’s like to mentor talented individuals through industry partnerships, highlighting the collaboration and innovation that drives the program’s success.

The WIL Program is about to open its next intake round for Summer and Semester 1, 2026. If any alumni are interested in hosting a student for an internship, please contact [email protected]

A Transformative Internship - Yash Vasta

My internship with the Western Australia Police Force was truly transformative and taught me the importance of working in a supportive environment. I was guided closely by my supervisor, Dr. Umneea, who not only supported my growth but also gave me a voice at the table with senior police personnel and community leaders. At the same time, I was able to develop new ideas by combining my role as a Residential Advisor at UWA’s College Row with the internship, which allowed me to work with college staff and the police as multiple stakeholders and successfully deliver projects.

I gained hands-on experience in project management and logistics by working on high-profile events for the Police Commissioner, such as coordinating the African Leaders Morning Tea and attending key talks at various universities and institutions. These opportunities sharpened my project management, logistical planning, and communication skills, while also teaching me to remain calm and professional under pressure.

Since completing my placement, I have continued working with WA Police in the Financial Crimes Division, which deepened my skills and broadened my perspective even further.

My WIL experience clarified my career goals and strengthened my work ethic, highlighting the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and emotional intelligence alongside technical expertise. As I approach the completion of my Master’s in Business Information and Logistics at the end of the year, and conclude my time at WAPOL, I feel well-prepared to enter the job market and pursue graduate opportunities in supply chain and logistics, where organisation, problem-solving, and collaboration are central to making a meaningful impact.

A Benchmark for future WIL Students - Dr Umneea Ahmad Khan
Strategic Advisor, Community Engagement Division, WA Police Force

Our first Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement with Mr. Yash Vasta was an exceptionally smooth and positive experience. Yash demonstrated a high level of professionalism, enthusiasm, and motivation to learn throughout his time with the Community Engagement Division, WA Police Force.

He consistently went above and beyond the scope of his placement, often volunteering for tasks outside his immediate responsibilities. This proactive attitude not only broadened his professional experience but also allowed him to strengthen his networks and gain exposure to diverse opportunities within the agency.

The skills, commitment, and initiative Yash displayed during his placement have set a high benchmark for future WIL students. His contributions were greatly valued, and it was no surprise that he was offered further opportunities following his placement.

We look forward to continuing our WIL partnership with the University of Western Australia and welcoming future students who can build upon the strong foundation Yash has established.
