Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered

7 September  – 7 December 2024

The exhibition is an exploration of fibre and woven forms in relation to the human body. Contemporary makers innovate using the traditions of old as they create pieces that critique power dynamics. Aligned with the theme for the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial IOTA24: Codes in Parallel In 2024 – the exhibition will investigate systems of power as they are enacted upon bodies.

The concept utilises a broad definition of fibre and textiles to include paintings on linen and canvas, irregular and convention-defying paintings the likes of Rossy Drake Brockman’s upholstered painting, installations include Military tattoo series by Zanny Begg, stitched works such as Teelah George’s large-scale embroidery, Blue Biro; and clothing and costumes – including the masks of Jody Quackenbush.
