Gracie Greene – It's Time
14 February – 4 April 2026
Gracie Greene was born in Billaluna Station in 1949 and later grew up at Balgo mission. Her parents came from the desert in Kartamarnti Country and her family would tell Gracie stories of how they lived off the land. In this way she also learnt the dreamtime stories of her mother’s and father’s country. It made her happy that she could paint these stories. 'I always tell my children about their grandmother and grandfather Country and now my daughter is following in my footsteps’.This exhibition celebrates the prodigious lifetime of cultural and artistic contribution of Greene, a major figure in the early development of the Balgo art movement. Across a long career, Greene remained singular, her innovative style of combining lively figuration within finely dotted topographies see stories unfold dynamically across the canvas. From early work at Balgo to a long partnership with Mangkaja Arts, her works embody a weighty legacy of sharing knowledge.
Presented with The Berndt Museum and The Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery with support from Mangkaja Arts as part of Perth Festival 2026 .
