Floor Talks – Strange Sensation

Hear artists Paul Uhlmann and Sarah Elson speak about their work in Strange Sensation. This exhibition draws from the UWA Art Collection to explore disturbances in our sense of the familiar.  

Paul Uhlmann is a Fremantle based artist who works across painting, drawing and artists’ books to create work which focuses on the forming and deforming image, in relation to place, process, impermanence, and embodiment. His work embraces a world view of immanence where all life folds into one living breathing substance. Our bodies are porous and part of the environment.

Sarah Elson is a Walyalup based artist whose work examines the nature of preciousness and the preciousness of nature. She works in nonferrous metals sourced from redundant currency, repurposed electrical cables and jewellery from failed relationships. Sarah’s practice involves growing and nurturing plants that become the subject of her work. She casts their decaying parts in metal to celebrate their resilience and creates armour-like forms to ally herself with nature.
