The UWA Smart Start program is an innovative course that offers you:
- The opportunity for entry into undergraduate studies upon successful completion;

- Contemporary coursework that provides an excellent foundation for university and lifelong learning.
About the course
UWA Smart Start is a highly successful course that enables members of the Great Southern community to prepare for degree-level studies at the UWA Albany Campus. The course is run collaboratively with the School of Indigenous Studies, based in Perth, and has been running since 2009. There are no fees for this course.
The course is delivered over 14 weeks in your first semester. Students aged 18+ who complete the full course successfully are eligible for entry into first-year degree studies delivered through UWA Albany. Students who gain entry via this pathway may complete an entire degree in Albany or can complete their degree studies in Perth upon successful completion of first-year degree studies (48 credit points) in Albany. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

This course provides in-depth study in the chosen specialisation. The course adds significantly to a relevant undergraduate degree through coursework and major research in the approved area of interest within the program. By enhancing the student's knowledge of their chosen field of study through advanced coursework units and extensive, independent research, the Master of Science (Thesis and Coursework) opens up a range of possible career opportunities, depending on the student's area of specialisation. Students can complete part (one year) of the following degrees by coursework and dissertation, in Albany:
Environmental Science
Experience an interdisciplinary approach to Environmental Science with a specialisation in one of Environmental Management, Marine and Coastal, Catchments and Water, Environmental Rehabilitation, Sensing and Environmental Data or Environmental Economics.
Master of Environmental Science
Biological Science
Western Australia (WA) is a marine and terrestrial biodiversity hotspot. Up to 80 per cent of the region's plants, marine fish and invertebrates are unique to the area. This makes WA the ideal living laboratory for studies in biological science. This course gives students an understanding of the molecular evolution, structure, physiology, reproduction, behaviour and ecology of organisms, and the skills to apply this knowledge to the management of natural systems and the species they support.

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a program of independent, supervised research and is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis. It is a highly flexible course that mirrors the structure and breadth of the Doctor of Philosophy. Standard duration of the course is 2 years, and it can be studied full time or part time.

- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD is a program of independent, supervised research assessed solely on a thesis that is examined externally. A PhD thesis must be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, demonstrating mastery of the subject of interest as well as an advance in that field of knowledge. Standard duration of the course is 4 years, and it can be studied full time or part time.
UWA Albany offers a vibrant and active group of doctoral researchers and supervisors. Research opportunities are diverse, ranging from projects that address fundamental ecology, through to integrating western and indigenous knowledge systems. You can study within or across terrestrial, aquatic and marine landscapes, as well as cultural, social and economic issues relevant at global, national or regional scales.

Research student profile
“I came to UWA to study abroad as part of a Master of Science Biodiversity and Conservation from University College London. The proximity to wild spaces and close connections to academics and traditional custodians drew me to the Albany campus. I enrolled in two units that featured a week of intensive fieldwork in Albany. These units were so amazing, I decided to transfer to the Albany campus. What followed was a beautiful semester of field trips to the Fitzgerald National Park, making wonderful friends with fellow students and, most memorably, learning from Elders about this beautiful Menang Country.
I'm now studying a PhD which gives me the opportunity to learn more about the cultural heritage of granite outcrops, how to conserve it and how the cultural heritage interacts with the biodiversity. I’m also working together with traditional custodians to add to the knowledge of cross-cultural ecology methodologies to better care for our country in a way that benefits people and the environment.“

Research and volunteer opportunities
Students have the opportunity to gain experience and build new skills through volunteering in a range of research activities. We have opportunities for you to assist with, for example:
- field-based sampling and collection of animals (mammals, birds, bats, fish, invertebrates) and plants
- laboratory experiments, and sample processing (e.g. macroinvertebrate identification)
- processing remote camera images of wildlife.
Our researchers are working with many different plants and animals, in different landscapes and with different people. By volunteering as research assistance, you will gain experiences and learn new skills that will benefit both your studies and future career aspirations...
