Dr Stephen Gilchrist – Responses to Black Sky

As part of our Friday talk series, Dr Stephen Gilchrist will respond to the cultural, political and environmental positions offered by artists in Black Sky at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery – from modes of collective working, to engaging with issues of sovereignty, colonialism, and resource extraction. As a First Nations writer and curator who has deeply engaged with and shaped discourses on Indigenous creative practices and epistemologies in Australia, Dr Gilchrist will expand upon trends elicited in the exhibition and beyond.

Belonging to the Yamatji people of the Inggarda language group of northwest Western Australia, Dr Stephen Gilchrist is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia. He is a writer and curator who has worked with the Indigenous Australian collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the British Museum, London, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College.
