Curator Emilia Galatis Q&A - Portals of Love and Loss: Sonia Kurarra

Sonia Kurarra Join a vibrant conversation with Curator Emilia Galatis in a Q&A with our audience discussing the Sonia Kurarra's latest exhibition, Portals of Love and Loss and Mangkaja Arts at Fitzroy Crossing.

Portals of Love and Loss is a landmark solo exhibition from Senior Walmajarri artist, Sonia Kurarra, one of the most successful living artists residing in WA. Painting the sandy billabong country along stretches of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, Sonia’s work reflects an intimate relationship with the river and its surrounding environment. Newly commissioned work will feature alongside key pieces that demonstrate the major themes of her practice, as well as recent experiments with leather, paper scrolls and Perspex.

Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency is a vibrant Aboriginal owned art centre in the township of Fitzroy Crossing, in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. The overarching goals of the organisation remain the same as much today as when it was first established; to support cultural, social and economic development for people of the Fitzroy Valley region. Mangkaja Artists are renowned for their innovative practise, uninhibited style and lively use of colour, painting images of country that share stories of culture and identity. Mangkaja represents award winning artists from the region and is a centre for innovation and artistic experimentation with multiple art forms. Mangkaja has gallery partners around the globe and is constantly growing its means of sharing the art and culture of the region in contemporary art exhibitions and events. Many artists are represented through each of the State Galleries, the National Gallery of Australia and significant private and public collections around the world.
