Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Why MFA?
Cyber threats are constantly evolving, and passwords alone are no longer enough to keep systems and information secure. MFA significantly strengthens account protection by requiring a second form of verification—such as a code from a mobile app or device notification—before granting access to UWA services.
Even if a password is stolen or guessed, MFA acts as a critical safeguard that helps prevent unauthorised access to your accounts and sensitive data.
How does MFA work?
Once you have setup MFA, accessing a UWA service begins as usual with your University ID and password. After your credentials are validated, you will receive an MFA prompt—most commonly a push notification, although you may opt for a one-time code sent by SMS or an automated phone call.
Simply approve the notification, enter the code, or confirm the call to complete your sign-in.
To minimise disruption, these prompts typically appear only when you sign in from a new device or a different location.
How to set up MFA
Detailed guides are available below, which provide step-by-step instructions for our recommended MFA setup. It typically takes around 10 minutes to configure MFA, and you will need a smartphone and computer.
How to update an existing MFA setup
When getting a new device or phone you may need to update your MFA setup. The guides below provide step-by-step instructions to manage your MFA setup.
