WA University Sector Review

UWA Submission

On 27 July 2025, Minister for Tertiary and International Education Tony Buti announced a committee has been set up to undertake a cost-benefit analysis of state university structure options – with no proposed outcomes or decisions made.

This follows a University Sector Review by the State Government in 2023 to examine the structure of Western Australia's four public universities, to support and strengthen our higher education sector. Following initial targeted consultations, the University Sector Review Panel released a Discussion Paper on 1 May 2023, seeking input from stakeholders.

UWA provided a submission to the University Sector Review Panel in May 2023, responding that we wanted what was best for the State, aligned with our founding mission to advance the prosperity and welfare of our communities through providing world-class education, research and community engagement.

UWA was founded to advance the welfare of our communities, and we remain committed to our founding mission. We look forward to working with the WA government to explore how we may serve our communities better and, as a research-intensive university, to advance WA’s knowledge economy.

We do not expect there will be any interruption to the University’s teaching, research or operations throughout what is likely to be a long-term process. You can keep up to date with developments regarding the review on our website.
