Faris, an international student from Saudi Arabia, is currently studying a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on oral cancer chemoprevention at UWA’s Dental School. Discover what sparked his interest in the field, the most life-changing moment of his journey so far, and his advice for future students considering a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at UWA.
What inspired Faris to pursue research in his field
Faris’s path into research was shaped by his academic journey. After completing multiple degrees and qualifying as a pathologist, he found his passion for academic research. Before joining UWA, he completed a Master of Science in Oral Pathology in London and later taught Diagnostic Sciences as a lecturer.
“After earning my postgraduate and master’s degrees in the UK, I joined the Department of Diagnostic Sciences as a faculty member, where my role as a lecturer allowed me to blend clinical practice with research. Interacting with students not only inspired me but also solidified my passion for research, ultimately leading me to pursue a PhD.”
What people may not know about pathologists
Pathologists often work quietly in the background with their vital contributions unseen by patients and even other healthcare professionals. But, they play a crucial role in every care team. Faris highlights the powerful, often overlooked impact of these medical detectives.
“Many people might not realise that as a pathologist, I play a central role in determining patient treatment directions (often behind the scenes). While patients may not always see us, our commitment to their well-being is unwavering.
My research focuses on cancer and precancerous diseases, and in our quest to enhance patient health, we are constantly striving to break down complexities that could lead to life-saving advancements.”
The most rewarding moment of Faris’s research so far
For Faris, one of the most exciting milestones in his research career at UWA was seeing his lab work translate into real-world impact.
“Witnessing tangible results from my work on generating organoids from patient biopsies was exhilarating. This breakthrough will allow us to examine genetic profiles and tailor treatments [for patients], ushering in a new era of personalised medicine.”
The supportive research community at UWA
Faris’s journey through academia has been shaped not only by his studies, but also by the meaningful connections and support systems he’s found along the way. At UWA, PhD supervisors help guide you through choosing a research focus all the way through to completing your dissertation.
“Being surrounded by brilliant minds at UWA is truly a blessing. In UWA, the solidarity among PhD students and the readiness of seniors to help have made the process smooth. A standout moment for me was when my supervisor consistently took the time to check in on me as an individual, not just as a student. His ongoing approach made me feel continuously valued and supported throughout my journey.”
Faris’s advice for future research students
