Sahar, a former international student from the Middle East, graduated from UWA in 2022 with a Doctor of Philosophy. Now a proud UWA alumni, she reflects on why she chose to study here, what she loved most and the advice she has for future students considering studying overseas.

Sahar

What Sahar enjoyed most about studying at UWA

Sahar made the most of her time at UWA. From focusing on her research to getting involved in student clubs and supporting both current and future international students as a UWA UniBuddy student mentor.  She also had the opportunity to teach a unit as part of her research journey, which helped her build new skills and gain confidence.

“This experience was instrumental in developing my teaching and communication skills. I was consistently impressed by my students' enthusiasm for the subject matter and their keen attention to detail, which often provided me with fresh perspectives.”

Collaborating with academics and fellow students

Studying at university is a life-changing experience that gives you the chance to connect with people from all walks of life. For Sahar, one of the most rewarding parts of her research journey was learning from world-renowned academics and collaborating with other passionate students, which opened doors for future opportunities.

“Meeting academics from across the globe was a truly enriching experience. Attending their seminars provided valuable insights into the latest research in different highly regarded universities. However, the most invaluable aspect was the chance to connect with these researchers personally, learn from their career experiences, and discuss potential collaborations.”

Moments Sahar will never forget

Some of Sahar’s fondest memories were made through her roles as a Student Ambassador and Unibuddy, where she helped new international students settle into life in Perth.

“A special moment was reconnecting with a prospective student I'd assisted as a Student Ambassador. She later joined the UniBuddy program, and we had the pleasure of working together. It was incredibly rewarding to see her thriving at UWA and to hear how my earlier guidance had helped her.”

What Sahar loves most about living in Perth

A few of Sahar’s favourite things about studying and living in Perth is the lifestyle and access to different types of nature.

“With countless gorgeous beaches within easy reach, Perth's coastal lifestyle is irresistible. I'm also a big fan of the national parks and the scenic walks along the Swan River. Matilda Bay and Kings Park are my go-to places for relaxation and meditation.”

Sahar’s advice for future students

Moving overseas to study is big decision. Here’s Sahar’s advice for anyone thinking about taking that leap:

“Moving to a new country can seem daunting, but embracing the change and connecting with others makes it much easier. You'll build a home away from home before you know it. Go for it – you won't regret it!”
