Hear from Echo, a current international student from China studying Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Business Law and Economics. Echo shares her experience at UWA so far and the positive impact the Global Excellence Scholarship had on her studies.
I’ve also had the chance to volunteer and have a positive impact through being a being UniMentor for three semesters, participating in TLG e-mentor and a program to help provide education to children in rural areas.
Having the Global Excellence Scholarship definitely reduced my financial burdens, and I was able to use the money to do something I was passionate about.
Get out there, try new different things, talk to different people and work on yourself!

Meet Echo
Hi, I’m Echo. I am a third year student, studying Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Business Law and Economics at UWA.
I am a Chinese International student who has been living in Perth for three years. After attending high school in mainland China, I started a Bachelor of Laws in Macau and decided to transfer to Australia and continue my degree. I did a Diploma of Commerce at Taylor’s College for my first year and went straight into my second year at UWA.
Why did you choose to study at UWA?
I chose to study at UWA because the university is ranked highly in Australia and globally. I applied through an education agent who visited the UWA campus and highly recommended it. UWA has amazing teachers and advanced teaching facilities, making it the perfect choice for me!How has your experience been so far at UWA?
Since coming to UWA in 2020, I have had the chance to be involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. These include being Vice President of AIESEC, General Secretary of UWACSSA and Welfare Officer of the International Student Department.I’ve also had the chance to volunteer and have a positive impact through being a being UniMentor for three semesters, participating in TLG e-mentor and a program to help provide education to children in rural areas.
What do you enjoy most about studying at UWA?
Perth is a very diverse multicultural community and I’ve had the chance to get to know a lot of people from different backgrounds. This has enhanced my cross-cultural understanding and given me the chance to improve my English!Did you receive a scholarship to study at UWA as an international student?
I received the UWA Global Excellence Scholarship which included a $10,000 a year discount on my fees. What impact did receiving a scholarship to study at UWA as an international student have on you?
My family and I were so happy when I received the scholarship because it showed the milestone of my past hard work. I was so excited when I came into UWA and the scholarship put a positive sense of pressure on me to do well, I didn’t want to let my family and myself down so I’ve always pushed myself to get grades I am proud of.Having the Global Excellence Scholarship definitely reduced my financial burdens, and I was able to use the money to do something I was passionate about.
What was the application process like for the Global Excellence Scholarship?
My education agent advised me that UWA had this scholarship for international students, and all I had to do was put in an application to study here. The Global Excellence Scholarship was automatically awarded to me by UWA with my offer. Is there any advice you would give to a future student considering Perth/UWA?
Live your life to the fullest, especially in your undergrad years. Studying is important but don’t build your life entirely around study and academic achievement. There’s so much the university and Perth have to offer.Get out there, try new different things, talk to different people and work on yourself!
What are your plans for when you graduate from UWA?
I am planning to study Master of Taxation and Business Law or the Juris Doctor next year in Australia because I want to continue pursuing a law pathway and specialise in Business Law.Want to know more about studying at UWA?
