Dr Helen Wilcox is the Doctor of Medicine Program Director and Head of the Medical Education Unit with the Medical School at UWA. She led the design and development of the new MD 2021 program and the articulating undergraduate double major, Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice, of which she is now the course coordinator. Dr Wilcox is also Discipline Lead for the clinical preparation rotation in the second year of the MD.

As Chair of the Medical Program Committee and Medical School Learning and Teaching Committee, Dr Wilcox supports staff who design and deliver the MD program. Similarly, as Head of the Medical Education Unit, she supports staff to progress educational and student support initiatives within the MD, including developing interprofessional learning, assessment and evaluation frameworks, curriculum and assessment blueprints, standard setting methodology, and processes to communicate with and monitor performance of clinical supervisors.

Dr Helen Wilcox led the MD program’s response to COVID-19, including suspension and resumption of online teaching and clinical placements, developing principles for vulnerable students during COVID-19, processes for the award of ungraded passes in 2020, and coordinating teaching, learning and advocacy for students overseas (provision of online teaching, advocacy for travel permits and exchange electives instead of Perth-based placements).

Dr Wilcox represents the MD program and UWA on the Faculty Learning and Teaching committee, UWA Senate MD Course Working Group, Australian Medical Council Medical School Assessment Committee, and the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand’s Medical Education Collaborative Committee.
