Future Tails

Future Tails is a new initiative leading the way in global tailings management through a partnership between The University of Western Australia, Rio Tinto and BHP.

It includes training programs to build talent and capability; publications that summarise state-of-the-art tailings analysis, design, operation and management; and research collaborations with industry to drive further innovation.

Training and professional development

Education, training, continuing professional development and micro-credentials will improve capability and expertise in tailings management to executives, technical personnel, engineers and operational staff in Australia and internationally. The Future Tails UWA micro-credentials will provide opportunities to complete postgraduate study, including a Master of Tailings Management.

Researching for future knowledge

Future Tails research will generate knowledge that can be transferred to new technologies and processes and be incorporated into the next generation of geotechnical engineers. Specific areas of research include static liquefaction, filtered and dry stacked tailings, and numerical modelling for dam break studies.

PhD Opportunities 

The PhD candidate will work on a project that will assist in significant reductions in the risks associated with management of mine tailings, both here in Australia and internationally.

Creating the industry technical reference

A consolidated industry reference book will draw together information on best practice technologies. Governance of safe and effective management of tailings will be developed, with pared-down versions that can be rolled out to line managers responsible for tailings management.
