Helping veterans transition into higher education

A new program launched today aims to help defence veterans prepare for university life by building academic skills, confidence and foundational knowledge while recognising their prior service.

Federal Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, the Hon Matt Keogh announced the Veteran Recognition of Prior Learning – Tertiary Support Grants Program would provide $250,000 to The University of Western Australia, the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University.

“Veterans bring extensive training, discipline, leadership and adaptability — exactly the qualities that set students up for success in higher education and beyond, but transitioning to university can be daunting, particularly for those who have been out of formal study for some time,” Minister Keogh said.

UWA will deliver the Veteran Academic Preparatory Program (VAPP), starting in 2026 to support ADF veterans transitioning into higher education, starting in second semester this year.

The full-time program will involve two days of on-campus learning, allowing flexibility for veterans with work or service commitments.

All units will be designed to mirror undergraduate-level expectations, ensuring a smooth academic transition and students who complete the program in 2026 will be able to enrol in their undergraduate degree of choice starting in semester one 2027.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the new course was expected to attract 30 veteran participants this year.

“With strategic expansion to online learning and increased awareness of UWA’s veterans’ program, we expect participation to grow to an average of 100 veterans each year by 2030,” Professor Chakma said.

“Transitioning from uniform to civilian life can be challenging for many veterans and their families.

“Key to this transition is recognition of their unique skills and attributes and respect for their service.”

Through the UWA Defence and Security Institute, UWA has developed deep relationships with veterans and defence stakeholders, contributing to research, policy, and education initiatives that address the challenges veterans face during their transition to civilian life.
