The Digitisation Centre of Western Australia (DCWA) is pleased to announce that the City of Albany has joined the Centre as a Gold Partner.
Partnership with the DCWA will help accomplish community aspirations to digitise their collections for long-term preservation, provide access to crucial information and facilitate research on the content digitised.
Paul Nielsen, Manager Arts and Culture at the City of Albany, said:
‘The City of Albany covers an area of 4,312 square kilometres on the south coast of WA on Noongar country, traditionally owned and occupied by the Menang people for more than 60,000 years.
'Albany is Western Australia’s first European settlement and has a unique chapter in the ANZAC story as the place where more than 40,000 Australian and New Zealand troops gathered to sail for the battlefronts of the First World War. With an estimated population of over 42,000 and growing, Albany is the administrative and service hub of the Great Southern region.
'The City of Albany joined DCWA as part of its evolving strategy to manage critical records across the broad spectrum of Council business. Priority areas for digitisation include:
- Current Council business;
- Building and Planning files;
- Records; and
- Heritage Collections
'The City houses significant heritage collections at History Great Southern - Kaartdijin Biddi Albany in the Albany Public Library and the Princess Royal Fortress. Preserving these important records and ensuring ongoing access is a key focus area of this strategy.’
The DCWA is an important infrastructure with the purpose to digitise WA cultural and other collections to international archival standards to facilitate access to, preservation of, and research on the digitised collections.
