IAS Visiting Fellowships


 

The Institute of Advanced Studies plays a central role in facilitating interdisciplinary research collaborations between UWA’s scholars and leading researchers from across Australia and the world, with a mission of further enhancing the University's global research profile.

Institute of Advanced Studies Visiting Fellowships are designed to foster Interdisciplinarity in research, by supporting visits from leading Australian and International scholars across all disciplines to visit The University of Western Australia.

Individuals working outside the academy, including artists, musicians, writers, activists, and public intellectuals are eligible to apply for an IAS Visiting Fellowship where their visit would contribute to the overall mission of UWA.

Remuneration

Grants of up to AUD $3,000 for Australian-based scholars, and up to AUD $6,000 for international scholars are available to support costs of travel and accommodation related to activities by the Visiting Fellow. 

The IAS Visiting Fellowship can be considered as seed funding and applicants may wish to contact the UWA Office of Research to discuss funding support options for future research collaborations.

Rapid Response
A small amount of funding has been allocated to allow for out-of-round/rapid response applications. This category is designed to assist distinguished scholars visiting on short notice. Applicants should demonstrate that funding could not be obtained through the main round.

How to Apply

  • Who is eligible to apply?

    Leading researchers from all disciplinary backgrounds and eligible individuals such as artists, writers, musicians, activists, and public intellectuals whose visit would contribute to UWA’s mission.

    Applicants will need to have two or more UWA hosts from at least two different disciplines.

    UWA hosts can be academic or professional staff who are engaged in research as part of their role.

    Who is not eligible to apply?

    • Adjunct staff at UWA.
    • Fellows covered under UWA affiliation agreements with alternative arrangements.
  • Remuneration

    Grants of up to AUD $3,000 for Australian-based scholars, and up to AUD $6,000 for international scholars are available to support costs of flights, accommodation, land transport and visa costs related to activities by the Visiting Fellow.

    Funds are capped at $3,000 AUD and $6,000 AUD and awardees should consider all costs of travel before arranging a visit to Perth.

    Expenditure of the grant must be within 12 months of the award.

  • What activities are expected of Visiting Fellows?

    Visiting Fellows and hosts are expected to contribute to UWA’s research environment through activities such as:

    • Public lectures, masterclasses, workshops, or symposia
    • Publications or creative outputs
    • Grant development
    • Collaborative research projects

    Are there requirements after the completion of the Fellowship?

    Fellows and hosts are asked to:

    • provide a final report and participate in periodic surveys by the Institute of Advanced Studies requesting follow-up information on research outcomes that have resulted from the Fellowship.
    • Include the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies Visiting Fellowship in their institutional affiliation by-line in any publications arising from the Fellowship.
  • How are applicants assessed?

    Applicants will be assessed against the following criteria:

    • Academic excellence and standing against career stage of the proposed Visiting Fellow.
    • The extent to which the visit aligns with UWA’s Research Priorities.
    • The value and benefits of the research outputs and their impact to UWA.
    • The extent to which the application demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinarity in the proposed collaboration.
    • Priority will be giving to first time prospective Fellows and hosts to increase the diversity of scholars who engage with the IAS.
    • The scope of the proposed activity with the IAS.
  • How to Apply 
    Applicants must email a signed copy of the completed application form along with a current CV to [email protected] by the closing date.
  • Visas for travel

    The type of activity proposed will determine which Visa the Fellow will be eligible to apply for when preparing to visit Australia.

    Accuracy is essential, as participation in research will affect the type of Visa required. Visa information and application guidance is available on the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website.
