Institute of Advanced Studies 

The Institute of Advanced Studies brings researchers from all over the world to The University of Western Australia, with the aim of further enhancing UWA's global research profile.

The University of Western Australia is recognised internationally as an excellent, research-intensive university and a leading intellectual and creative resource to the community it serves.

The Institute provides an active foundation of support for the intellectual activity of its community through its annual program of activities and Visiting Fellows and serves as a nexus for encouraging new and collaborative research, knowledge transfer and dissemination of ideas at the University.

Our mission is to connect people and ideas by supporting and conducting interdisciplinary research, fostering inclusive public dialogue, and democratising access to trustworthy knowledge, while showcasing UWA’s research strengths to create real-world impact.

Vision

To be a catalyst for transformative interdisciplinary scholarship that brings leading thinkers together to address the complex challenges of our time and shape a more informed, equitable, and sustainable future.

Activities and programs

Specific activities of the IAS include:

  • promoting and maximising the benefit from visiting scholars and fellowships for all members of our academic community
  • coordinating across disciplines to enhance the profile and opportunities of research initiatives
  • organising and hosting interdisciplinary research seminars and workshops
  • hosting visits from distinguished professionals outside of the academy, including artists and public intellectuals, who can contribute to scholarly debate
  • being a research hub to ensure the University gains benefit from international and national benchmark agreements
  • being a creative resource to the academic, professional, business, graduate and cultural communities.
  • Institute of Advanced Studies Visiting Fellowships, through which distinguished scholars are invited to participate across disciplines in the University community as well as in their specialist field
  • management of the Gledden Visiting Fellowship to encourage wider participation by distinguished scholars in cognate disciplines.
