Gillian Altham: Harry Leaver Inspire Scholarship recipient

Harry Leaver bequest: helping students discover their dreams

As a physics and conservation biology major, I have massive dreams to one day study astrobiology and become an astronaut.

Gillian Altham is a recipient of a scholarship established through the bequest of Mr Harry Leaver OAM. This scholarship is awarded to rural students in financial need, to study in the areas within Agriculture and Science.

Receiving the Harry Leaver Inspire Scholarship has allowed Gillian to focus her attention on her education and not be distracted by the financial burdens of being away from home.

"In my first year of my undergraduate degree, I’ve been able to achieve all Distinctions and High Distinctions in my units; I’m very proud of myself for these results and attribute a large part of my success to the financial support the Harry Leaver scholarship provided me."

The physics and conservation biology major, with dreams of becoming an astronaut, can also enjoy greater freedoms outside of her study that benefit her well-being. “Having time to explore interests beyond my degree has immensely helped reduce stress levels. This in itself impacts my studies and allows me to live a happier, healthier life."

"Receiving a scholarship as generous as the Harry Leaver’s scholarship has made me so thankful for the people in my life, especially my mum, who have supported me and given me the opportunities that many rural students such as Harry never had.”

With a passion for learning Gillian has always prioritised her education. "I have massive dreams to one day study astrobiology and become an astronaut. I have a passion for exploring the universe and how everything within it works. I feel Harry would approve."
