UWAConnect

Discover the unlimited possibilities available to you at UWA

Whether you’re a new or existing student, broaden your opportunities with this exciting six-week program of activities.

Week 1 - STUDYConnect

24 - 28 July

Get on track as early as possible and think about forming good study habits. Get organised and discover how to access the huge range of in-person and online support services and resources available at UWA.

STUDYSmarter, UWA’s Academic Skills Centre, provides free, innovative academic skills development programs to improve your study techniques, time management, writing, communication, English language, maths, stats and research skills.

Activities this week will include academic skills workshops and one-to-one consultations, as well as UWA Library workshops and Book a Librarian services.

Now is a good time to start your online learning modules, Academic Conduct Essentials (ACE), Communication and Research Skills (CARS) and/or Indigenous Study Essential (ISE) – you’ll be automatically enrolled in the ones that are relevant to you in LMS.

By the end of this week you should be set with a range of study skills, tools and resources and feel confident about knowing where to go if you need any help getting started.

Week 2 - CAREERConnect

31 July - 4 August

It’s time to think about your career direction and what you can do from the start of your degree to achieve your goals.

The Careers and Employability team will be offering drop-in services across the week, where you can stop by and speak to a careers advisor.

The UWA Careers and Employability Centre in Student Central runs regular career and resumé workshops and employer networking events. You can register for these events and search for employment opportunities via the UWA student jobs board, UniHub.

This week will have a LinkedIn workshop and a session on personality dimensions.

This week you’ll also get the chance to hear from alumni who have gone on to create exciting careers following their studies at UWA, learn more about volunteering opportunities offered by the UWA Student Guild and attend information sessions to get your career pathway on track.

Week 3 - SOCIALConnect

7 - 11 August

Your goal for this week is to make new social connections – meet other students, join Guild clubs and societies, join in on the great activities offered by UWA Sport, come along to off campus excursions and discover the various cultural events and activities on campus.

The Guild has more than 180 clubs at UWA, covering just about every interest: course-related, cultural, political, religious, hobby-related and more. They’ll be taking over Oak Lawn on Tuesday with Club Carnival so come down and find out what they do, get tickets to upcoming events, join clubs and societies and get involved with the best campus culture in the country.

The Transition Team has a number of social events planned both on and off campus.  Keep an eye out for more events over the coming weeks to connect with new friends and your new surroundings.

There are opportunities to be linked with UniMentors (if you don’t already have one) as well as a chance to catch up with your mentor groups to see how you’re going, now that you've started.

Week 4 - WELLNESSConnect

14 - 18 August

It’s time to check in with how you’re feeling, familiarise yourself with the support services available and form good habits for looking after your wellbeing while at university.

You’ll learn more about the range of counselling and medical services at UWA and the various ways we can support you. You’ll get to learn more about the fitness and wellbeing programs available at UWA Sport and try out a range of activities such as yoga, fitness classes and the gym. You’ll get to meet the Health Promotions team and learn about health education on campus.

The UWA Student Guild also offers you support services through faculty societies, Guild departments and student reps. They have a professionally trained Student Assist team on hand to help you with any academic, welfare or financial issues.

Week 5 - COMMUNITYConnect

21 - 25 August

How can you get involved in the community at UWA? Explore the on-campus galleries and museums which host amazing exhibitions, talks and seminars throughout the year. Explore the exciting music, theatre, arts and cultural events the UWA Cultural Precinct supports throughout the year.

Learn more about contemporary social issues and how you can make a difference in the wider community by connecting with The McCusker Centre for Citizenship. They run an interesting series of events and forums and offer the opportunity to complete an internship at a not-for-profit organisation where you can give back to the community and earn credit towards your degree.

Celebrate student culture and enjoy campus life with the many great Guild clubs and societies on offer. They’d love you to get involved, meet other students and embrace being part of the UWA community.

Week 6 - GLOBAL AND CULTURALConnect

28 August - 1 September

UWA provides you with many opportunities to undertake exchange and short-term programs with international universities through the UWA Global Learning Office. These programs are an incredible experience, providing you with the opportunity to see the world and broaden your employment prospects. There are scholarships and loans to help you get there. This week there will be a mini Global Study Fair where you can ask questions to returned exchange students. You can also learn more about the overseas opportunities available to you at fortnightly information sessions.

The UWA Careers and Employability Centre provides opportunities to network with global companies across a range of industries and can even connect you with career opportunities in China.
