Nur, a current international student from Indonesia studying a Doctor of Education, is helping shape the future of teaching and learning through her research at UWA. Her work reflects what it means to study with purpose, to ask brave questions and challenge long-held assumptions.
Find out why her research matters, how the Graduate Research School at UWA supports her, and the advice she wants future researchers to remember.
What inspired Nur’s research journey
Driven by a passion for educational improvement, Nur came to UWA to contribute to meaningful change in her home country by examining how teachers understand and apply assessment, an essential part of helping students learn, grow, and succeed.
Nur’s work has the potential to strengthen teacher training, inform policy and improve learning experiences for students across Indonesia.
“I hope that my research will help teachers and also the policymakers to create a more suitable program to assess students’ learning and support them.”
Finding connection and support at UWA
Balancing postgraduate study with family life isn’t easy, but Nur has found that the Graduate Research School and community at UWA provide the flexibility and care she needs to succeed.
“Here at UWA, we've got a lot of support; the lecturers, the supervisors and all the staff. They understand what we need here.”
She highlights the academic guidance and understanding she’s received that has helped her grow as a researcher.
“I study, but I’m also living my life as a mum and as someone with a busy family life. I feel like the academics and staff at UWA understand what we're going through, therefore they support us no matter what.”
Nur’s advice for future research students
Nur advocates for future UWA researchers to embrace the journey, stay curious, and take advantage of the people and resources designed to help you thrive.
“If you're thinking about doing research at UWA, my advice will be to enjoy the process and make use of the support systems available.”
