Jorren is an international student from The Netherlands currently completing his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at UWA. He collaborates with The Kids Research Institute Australia to explore childhood brain cancer and sarcoma. He shares what sparked his passion for research, the moment he realised the life-changing impact of his work, and what it means to be part of UWA’s vibrant research community.

A personal connection to cancer research
For Jorren, the decision to pursue cancer research was deeply personal. Having witnessed the effects of cancer on people close to him from a young age, he was driven by a desire to understand the disease and contribute to finding better treatments.
“I wanted to help them and learn how cancer works. How can a disease be so devastating. This is even more impactful in children; they all deserve to be happy healthy kids with more effective and safer treatments.”
The most rewarding moment of Jorren’s research journey so far
Jorren and his team at The Kids Research Institute Australia are working on developing safer, more targeted therapies for children with cancer. One of the most rewarding moments in his research journey came when he realised the potential of his work to make a real difference.
“Realising that your contribution to research, as small as they might sometimes be, could make fundamental changes to the health of children.
We are working towards safer and more effective treatments for children with cancer and our research could lead to new clinical trials and improve outcomes for children with cancer.”
Finding connection and support at UWA
Pursuing a PhD is a significant, life-changing commitment, and Jorren credits UWA's supportive environment for helping him thrive both academically and personally.
“There is a sense of community within postgraduate students at UWA. We all want to improve the world around us and seek wisdom during our degree.
UWA gave me the opportunity to excel, to further improve the (international) student community and be in a friendly environment to make it an amazing experience.”
