Name one of the fastest ways to share information that’ll be received by hundreds, if not, thousands of people.
Social media, of course!
That’s why organisations, big and small, for profit and not-for-profit, are harnessing the power of social media to increase their digital presence, generate awareness and effect positive social change.
Social Media for Good seeks to partner not-for-profit organisations with UWA students who are passionate about making a difference and interested in expanding their digital marketing skills.
Let’s hear from Amy Walsh, Co-founder of Social Media for Good, and Bachelor of Commerce student volunteer Chandini Thirumalai.
Amy, what is Social Media for Good?
Social Media for Good is a UWA non-profit volunteering program that provides UWA arts, media and communication students with opportunities to gain social media marketing skills while digitally empowering local not-for-profits. It’s a win-win.
Our students do anything and everything digital marketing, from content marketing to strategic direction, videography, to paid advertising. It ultimately comes down to what their organisation needs and what skills the student would like to specifically develop.
UWA Social Media for Good has partnered with 21 different organisations and 17 different students throughout this period. Many students stay on with their organisations beyond the program. One such student is Chandini Thirumalai.
Chandini, tell us about your volunteering experience with Social Media for Good
I am super passionate about social media content creation and volunteering has always been a part of who I am. So this program was the perfect opportunity for me to fuse my passion and pursuit. During my time in the program, I made content for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
After my term as a Social Media for Good volunteer, I went on to become the Marketing Coordinator of a volunteering program called Micro Volunteering. Through these programs, I have made some incredibly meaningful connections that I will cherish for a lifetime.
