Netflix on TV screen

What you should study based on your Netflix viewing habits

Ever found yourself glued to a new TV series, bingeing every episode and wondering how on earth Netflix recommended you a show that’s exactly what you needed and unexpectedly blown your mind?

Us too!

Netflix algorithms have a sneaky way of predicting which TV shows you’ll be interested in watching based on your past viewing habits, tastes and preferences. The platform regularly breaks viewers’ preconceived ideas by recommending shows that are totally left of field.

And we love them for it!

But, can Netflix predict what you’ll choose to study at uni? Or hint at a possible career change? Get ready couch potato! Grab some popcorn, Maltesers, and probably a pen and paper, and let’s see what your Netflix viewing habits say about you, and what you should study with us at UWA!

The Crown

Loosely based on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown’s four seasons (soon to be five) follow the life of Queen Lizzie and the historical events that shaped the second half of the 20th century, during a period of much political uncertainty.

If you can’t get enough of The Crown and Claire Foy’s superb acting skills, why not check out our History major where you’ll learn about wars, revolutions, conflicts, nations, empires, economies, conflicts and cultures. You may also like our Law and Society or Political Science and International Relations majors too. Without an understanding of the past, how do we illuminate the present?

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

Whether you’re an avid TikTok’er, a stock standard millennial or a parent/guardian of one, you’ll have probably heard of Tiger King – the TV show that got us through WA’s COVID-19 lockdown.

Big cat enthusiasts Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin find themselves deadly rivals, with Baskin set on dismantling Exotic’s roadside zoo in favour of her Big Cat Sanctuary.

If, like us, you were taken aback by the absurd plot, shocked by the treatment of zoo staff and big cats, or in awe of the mullet Joe Exotic dons, a major in Conservation Biology or Zoology may be for you. Learn how to manage and research threatened species and ecological communities with a major in Conservation Biology or understand the diversity of animals and how they survive, thrive and persist with a major in Zoology

Black Mirror

With each episode set in an alternative dystopian reality, Black Mirror chronicles the dark side of modern-day technology as it slowly but surely turns upon its maker and causes absolute chaos (…no surprise there). If this show sparks your interest, you should check out our Computer Science or Data Science majors.

From search engines to smartphones, computer science involves the theory and design behind the intelligent systems and computers that transform the way we live, work and communicate. And as one of the most rapidly growing fields in information technology, Data Science unearths value and meaning from data to help businesses and organisations across the globe.

Mindhunter

How do you catch a criminal? In this psychological crime thriller, FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench pioneer revolutionary serial killer profiling to understand the psyche of some of the world’s most dangerous.

If you’re intrigued by the minds of the infamous Charles Manson or David Berkowitz, and providing you’re not too squeamish, Season 1 and 2 of Mindhunter is a must-watch. Avid viewers of this show may be interested in our Criminology major or Psychology (double major), Psychological Science or Psychology in Society majors to delve deeper into the mysteries of the human mind.

The truth about alcohol

Who knew there’s a science behind drinking? Join Accident and Emergency doctor Javid Abdelmoneim in The truth about alcohol as he ponders the hard truths about drinking, the benefits and the risks it poses to our bodies. This 8-part series will appeal to those who are ‘medicine minded’.  A major in Anatomy and Human Biology, Physiology or Population Health may be right for you.
