UWA is in the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. On the banks of the Swan River, Perth prides itself on embracing the new, as well as honouring tradition. With arts, culture and entertainment high on the agenda, you can live the city life just moments from the river and Kings Park, and only a short distance from the white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean.

Here’s the kind of lifestyle you can expect when you’re living and studying in Perth.

On-campus culture

UWA cultivates an open, accessible and inclusive on-campus culture. You’ll be welcomed into a supportive community where you can craft a lifestyle that suits you. There are more than 160 student clubs and societies registered with the UWA Guild – the student representative body – and you are sure to make new friends when you join them.

A busy social calendar gives you the opportunity to enjoy university life while also having access to student services, academic support, sports teams and personal development opportunities. Our ethos is one of encouragement and connection so that you feel part of the student body and come away with sought-after skills, lifelong friends and supportive mentors.

Teaching for tomorrow

At UWA, our desire is to empower and elevate students, and our teaching style reflects that. We strive to foster a nurturing learning style, designed to inspire you as you’re guided through your chosen area of study. We understand every student has their own needs, so our approach is dynamic and open-minded. We’ll be cheering you on as you take on each challenge along your learning journey, so that you can discover your strengths and reach your full potential.

Workplace culture

Perth has an enviable working culture, where a work/life balance is valued alongside productivity. Entry-level positions, as well as internships and work experience are available, and ‘from study to work’ initiatives exist through the government and corporate organisations. A key centre for several of the world’s largest businesses, Perth can be a great place to take your first step on the ladder. If you see yourself working in small business, the local start-up scene is a breeding ground for innovative ideas.

Limitless lifestyle

When you’re not studying, Perth has plenty of exciting places to explore and enjoy. Food and drink is taken seriously here, so you can take your pick of bars, restaurants, and clubs both in the city centre and surrounding suburbs. Fremantle, Claremont, Leederville, Mount Lawley and the city centre have great shopping options, including outdoor malls, shopping centres, and eclectic boutiques, as well as some of the best food, cocktails and live music venues. In the summer, locals head outside to enjoy outdoor cinemas with a choice of beautiful settings including forests, parks and rooftops.

Locals also love their arts and culture. Every year, the Perth Arts Festival brings the best live theatre, dance, art, music, and comedy acts from across the world together for one of the largest Fringe festivals in the world. Distributed across the city and throughout each suburb, this festival is just one incredible example of how Perth is staying at the forefront of popular culture.

Sport in the city

If you love sports, the city now has a new state-of-the-art Optus Stadium just outside the city centre, where live AFL and rugby games are played regularly. The WACA cricket ground hosts some of the most prestigious games on the tour’s calendar, and Perth Arena is home to the state’s thriving basketball scene, as well as international tennis tournaments.

Endless outdoor adventure

With nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no surprise that outdoor activities are popular in Perth. On the river, you can find every type of tour imaginable, from stand-up paddleboarding yoga and kayaking, to wine tours, fast ferries, sailing and much more. Head to the beach and learn to surf, or go diving and see some of the native oceanic flora and fauna up-close. There are dolphin, penguin and seal-watching tours, as well as whale-watching from September to December. Perth’s beautiful parks are open year-round and free to enter, with many hosting various events, especially during wildflower season.
