Meet Caleb, an Engineering graduate and Fogarty Scholar who has been awarded a 2025 Fulbright Scholarship.
He is off to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with the aim of exploring new technologies to mitigate and prevent the effects of climate change.
“[In particular] the space sector holds immense potential as a growing field of study, and there are many new and exciting technologies being developed each year. Being a part of this transformation would be amazing.”
Caleb’s involvement in UWA student life and community was a focus in his scholarship application, with emphasis on his mentoring and volunteering experiences. Highlights of his student experience include time spent in both social and professional clubs.
“University is what you make it, so throw yourself in. Join clubs and turn up, you can learn a lot over pizza at a committee night.”
As a Fogarty scholar, Caleb had experience applying for a prestigious scholarship, but it didn’t stop some feelings of doubt from creeping in.
My best piece of advice to anyone questioning whether they should apply is this - enjoy the process. You learn a lot through writing your application, and even if you are unsuccessful, you learn a lot about yourself and your goals.
His top tips for future Fulbright Scholarship applicants are to engage with university and local communities to help your application stand out, use it as an opportunity to think about your short- and long-term goals, and keep it real.
One size doesn’t fit all. There is no “recipe” for getting a Fulbright scholarship. Tell your unique story and let your achievements shine.
Final words of advice? “Have fun. Otherwise, what’s the point?”
