At UWA, an ATAR isn’t the only way to measure your potential - your ambition and achievements outside the classroom really matter. And with Experience-based entry, you can apply for a number of our bachelor's degrees using a combination of academic achievements including school and TAFE (with or without ATAR) and life experiences such as work, volunteering, sport and music.
Take it from Mikko, current UWA Bachelor of Science student, who applied through Experience-based entry. While Mikko’s journey to uni didn’t follow a traditional route, she says that the Experience-based entry pathway has been ‘life-changing’. After taking a decade long break between high school and uni, Mikko focused on getting some work experience under her belt while exploring her interest in dentistry. Now, Mikko’s studying towards her dream career to one day become a dentist.
Finding out about Experience-based entry
Initially, Mikko wasn’t sure if UWA was an option for her, and she wondered if her time away from study and not having an ATAR would affect her chances.
I wasn’t sure if I could get in with my old transcripts as I didn’t complete ATAR when I was in high school, but I was able to use my Certificates in Tourism, Business and prior work experience as a Dental Assistant which helped me with my application to study at UWA.
Finding a way to study at her university of choice was important for Mikko. She said that receiving her offer ‘was one of the most exciting days of [her] life!’
The journey to land her dream role

Choosing to study at UWA was an easy choice for Mikko, she fell in love with the unique campus atmosphere and relaxed study environment. All that was left was to figure out how to land her dream career to become a dentist.
"I chose to start studying the Bachelor of Science at UWA to pursue my current area of interest and build on my academic knowledge. My goal is to further my studies and use it as a preparation towards my dental career."
There are also plenty of practical, hands-on learning opportunities I always try to put my hand up to gain more industry experience to help build my skills.
Fitting in and finding her community at UWA
Even though she was nervous at first about starting uni, she says using the support that’s given and pushing herself outside her comfort zone to interact and chat to others has helped her make some of her best friends at uni.
“Since I started, I’ve made a great circle of friends, and I enjoy studying on campus. All my initial worries and concerns are in the past and I’m loving every moment of my study journey. I'm still creating the most unforgettable moments at UWA.”
Nowadays she ‘practically lives in Reid library’ as it’s her go-to spot for group study sessions or just to enjoy some peace and quiet.
