The Lifetime Price of Harm

Economic Costs of Sexual Violence and the Case for Timely Intervention in Australia

This report offers a comprehensive assessment of the economic costs of sexual violence in Australia, highlighting its pervasive and long-term effects across health, justice, education, and social service systems. By estimating both annual and lifetime costs associated with childhood sexual abuse and adult sexual assault, the analysis underscores the systemic burden borne by individuals and institutions alike.

These findings reinforce the need for sustained, targeted investment in prevention, early intervention, and survivor support. The report contributes to a growing evidence base that positions sexual violence not only as a social and public health crisis, but as a critical economic and policy imperative.
