Architect, researcher and educator

Kirill de Lancastre Jedenov is an architect, researcher, educator and the Architecture Undergraduate Coordinator at the UWA School of Design.

He decided to be an architect at age 10, upon visiting the Seville cathedral. “It was a fully designed work of art, where architecture and life blends completely. I immediately knew that I wanted to be part of this –- to design how life happens.” He went on to study with Manuel Aires Mateus and worked for João Luís Carrilho da Graça, both globally recognised and multi awarded architects.

Kirill co-founded an architecture studio that was active during the European Financial Crisis – a fundamental experience for the development of his work and teaching pedagogy. During the crisis a new generation of architects realised they could no longer continue to build with large amounts of resources, man hours and ecological impact without understanding better the consequences – immediate and future – of their actions.

With this knowledge directly from the streets of Lisbon, Kirill developed ‘Lessons from the Crisis’ and ‘Tactics Developed in Times of Economic Crisis Applied in Design Studios’. He implemented the program as a lecturer in Lisbon, Portugal; Innsbruck, Austria and here in Perth.

His work has been published/shown in several books, magazines, journals and conferences in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

With the principle that we need to leave places better off than when we inherited them, his work now focuses on improving the quality of architecture in Western Australia and reducing our ecological impact. “For that to happen we are preparing our students as independent thinkers that have the desire to open their own studios and take measures to stop Perth’s urban sprawl.”

Noteworthy is his published and ongoing work about innovative teaching pedagogy at UWA.

Teaching

Design is about living. Our students learn how to live a better life. With this acquired knowledge they can design to quietly and positively influence other people’s lives.Kirill de Lancastre Jedenov
