Andrew Endrey

Andrew Endrey is an Associate Lecturer within Humanities who teaches Chinese to English translation to postgraduate and undergraduate students. He has studied the Chinese language for more than 45 years and is a professional translator.

Mr Endrey studied at the University of Melbourne and in Taiwan before working in the Australian public service for 25 years in Canberra, China and Hong Kong. He has a lifelong interest in languages, and the Chinese language and society in particular. He was a founding member of the Refugee Review Tribunal from 1993 to 1997.

Mr Endrey is currently writing a doctoral thesis in political science on the history of the Anti-Rightist Campaign in China of 1957–58, as reflected in the memoirs of survivor ‘rightists’ after 1978 to the present day. He believes the history of the Anti-Rightist Campaign is being lost in China, due to the official ban on any public discussion of its origin and consequences. His research examines how the movement to purge dissident intellectuals has been remembered by its victims and other key players.
