Former Western Australian premier Colin Barnett AC will reflect on the opportunities and challenges of political leadership, Australia’s place in a changing world and lessons learned from leading one of the nation’s most dynamic states at an event to launch his new book at The University of Western Australia this month.
In Out West: Big State, Small Town Mr Barnett shares an insider’s perspective on WA’s evolution from an agriculture-based economy to a global mining and energy powerhouse, highlighting the international relationships and policy decisions that drove growth.
In his political memoir, Mr Barnett also discusses key achievements from his time in government including major infrastructure projects, environmental conservation initiatives in the Kimberley and native title settlements.
Born and educated in WA, Mr Barnett has honours and master’s degrees in economics from UWA. In 1990, he was elected Member for Cottesloe, was leader or deputy leader of the Parliamentary Liberal Party for every State Election from 1993 to 2017 and premier from 2008 to2017.
In conversation, Mr Barnett will draw on more than two decades in public life to reflect on WA’s remarkable economic and political transformation, and his role in shaping the State’s modern development.
While offering candid reflections on leadership, governance and Australia’s place in the world, Mr Barnett will provide a personal account of the opportunities and challenges of leading one of the nation’s most unique and influential states.
Professor Peter Robertson, Dean of UWA’s Business School, said the event was an opportunity to hear firsthand from one of WA’s most significant political figures.
“This is an opportunity to hear a unique perspective on the forces that have influenced WA’s growth and prosperity,” Professor Robertson said.
“Whether you’re interested in politics, history, economics or WA’s future, this promises to be an engaging evening of discussion and insight.”
The event will be hosted by business leader and co-Chair of the UWA Business School Advisory Board, Dr Mark Barnaba AC.
The in-person event will be held on Wednesday 30 September, 5pm-6pm at UWA’s Business School. For more information or to register click here. Out West: Big State, Small Town is now available.
