Building futures through UWA's Connect Scholarship program

For some talented young Western Australians, a university education can feel out of reach, not because they lack ability or ambition, but because financial pressures, geographic isolation, disability, family responsibilities or other barriers make the path more difficult.

Thanks to the generosity of donors to the University Appeal, more students now have the opportunity to overcome these challenges, pursue their ambitions and discover where a UWA education can take them.

Through the UWA Connect Scholarship Program, donor support is helping students access not only financial assistance, but also the guidance, confidence and sense of belonging needed to thrive at university. For many recipients, this support is life-changing, easing the pressures that can stand in the way of success and allowing them to focus on achieving their goals.

More than a scholarship, the program provides a network of support that helps students navigate university life, build connections and realise their potential. From mentoring and academic skills development to wellbeing initiatives and personalised guidance, students receive the encouragement and practical assistance needed to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

The UWA Connect Scholarship Program was created this year to ensure that talented students from underrepresented backgrounds have the opportunity to not only access higher education, but flourish throughout their university journey. The program reflects a shared belief among University Appeal donors that every student should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.

For UWA Connect Scholarship recipient Taneisha Brown, a second-year student studying Engineering and Commerce, that support has transformed what she believed was possible.

"The support from this scholarship has changed what I believed was possible for me. It eases financial pressure so I can focus, persist, and truly excel," she said. "As an Indigenous woman in a male-dominated field, it empowers me to challenge stereotypes and lead by example."

Fellow recipient Jasmine Dondas said the program's wrap-around support has helped her feel connected and confident as she navigates university life.

"Starting university is intimidating, but this community and the wrap-around care has built my confidence," she said.

These stories highlight the power of philanthropy to change lives. A scholarship is more than financial support. It is a vote of confidence in a student's future and a reminder that someone believes in their potential.

The University Appeal brings together a community of donors that is committed to creating opportunities for students facing barriers to higher education. Such generosity is helping build a more inclusive university community, ensuring talented students can access the opportunities they deserve and contribute their unique strengths and perspectives to Western Australia.

When donors invest in students, the impact extends far beyond the individual. It strengthens families, enriches communities and helps create the next generation of leaders, innovators, educators, health professionals and changemakers.

Every gift to the University Appeal helps open a door. Together, donors are removing barriers, changing lives and creating brighter futures for generations to come.
